College Bakery Mousepad
December 10, 2010
College Bakery in Cobble Hill was once Brooklyn’s favorite place for a birthday cake and has been sadly missed by all since it closed suddenly in September of 2005. The bakery took its name from St. Francis College, which was formerly on nearby Butler St.
Keep your memories of College Bakery fresh with great products like this Commemorative Mousepad. We now have lots of new products including iPhone and iPad accessories, water bottles and tons of new BABY CLOTHES available in the 718BROOKLYN Store.

Many of you are trying to reach the Baker, please read trough the comments to contact him through The Baker’s Wife.

WOW, no more COLLEGE BAKERY!! My heart just broke as I dialed a number that was drilled into my brain since the first time I tried their CAKE 1977. I dialed 718-624-5534 and heard the recording that this number is DISCONNECTED. I called 411 to confirm the correct number and they told me they don’t have a listing for a College Bakery on Court Street in Brooklyn. I laughed and told them that has to be wrong because COLLEGE BAKERY is on Court between Warren and Baltic. I then went online and found the article from the Daily News that they closed and I started to cry. I had bought my last birthday cake from them in December for my niece. I wanted to introduce COLLEGE BAKERY to my new job this Friday since my Birthday is Saturday and now I can’t.
My heart is crushed my taste buds is gone BUT I want to wish the Family and Friends from College Bakery the very best and thank them for their wonderful service in the past. You will truly be missed by a Native New Yorker from Brooklyn.
Where will we buy our cake? My family has been buying cakes here for generations :( So Sad to see it go…
When I was a kid we lived in Prospect Heights and my mother took the bus to Cobble Hill to get my birthday cake at College Bakery. For years I had come to expect the usual delicious creamy Pink Rose buttercream that was the highlight of every birthday. When I was 16 I was crazy about flowers and spent most of my free days at the Botanic Garden, That year mom came home with a big surprise. My birthday cake had not just the usual roses but three tiers covered with every kind of colorful flower you could think of. It was the year both me and my cake grew up.
I know the baker of this wonderful bakery, Mr. B.
Hello Miss B,
My name is Darlene and I worked in College Bakery in the year 1996, for about 2 years. My coworkers at the time were Vivian, Andrea, Elisa, and Liz to name a few. Your husband Mr.B is an awesome baker. We all appreciated his great talent. I dream constantly with College Bakery. It was a wonderful experience for me working there. By any chance, do you still communicate with Bob, Kevin or Roberta? If so, would you please be so kind to provide them with my email address? My email address is: d_rodriguez81@yahoo.com. Thank you so much. I wish you and your husband well.
HI DARLENE THIS IS MRS.B. IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION ABOUT COMMUNICATING WITH BOB KEVIN AND ROBERTA THE ANSWER IS NO.WE DO NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THEM. THESE PEOPLE WERE NOT WHAT WE THOUGHT THEY WERE.THESE PEOPLE LEFT MR.B WITHOUT A JOB UNKNOWN TO HIM. THEY NEVER TOLD US THAT THE BAKERY WAS CLOSING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.TO TOP IT ALL THEY ALSO WANTED OUR APARTMENT.THE OWNERS OF THIS BAKERY WERE NO NICE PEOPLE,THEY WERE JUST USERS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE MUST VUANABLE.FOR YEARS MR. B TOOK ALOT OF B.S. FROM ALL OF THEM BUT WE NEEDED TO SURVIVE.MR.B IS NOW AT LASSEN AND HENNINGS IN BROOKLYHN HEIGHTS. HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL.NICE HEARING FROM YOU. MR.B SEND HIS REGARDS.
Hi…I was the one that told the owner of “718″ that the College Bakery was named for St. Francis College. I told her this at a street fair while I was admiring her photographs of the College Bakery. I am so thrilled to see it memorialized on a mouse pad. The best thing about the bakery for me were the Halloween cupcakes. I also loved the Ballerina cake toppers they sold. We used to stop in on the way to school every morning. I went to St. Peter’s Catholic School. My grandmother lived on Baltic near Smith. My mom told me she remembered when the bakery had tables and chairs where you could sit and enjoy your cake with a cup of coffee. They pre-dated Starbucks by more than half a century. What great memories!!!
Stephanie ,
So good to hear from you. I was on court street and saw one of our photo tees in the window of Mastellone’s and was happy they are still in business. The is not a month that goes by that one of our cherished businesses closes down. I personally miss the Italian Grocery on 3rd and President. The new owner promised me last year to keep the facade but I see it is gone.
Yes they were famous for their birthday cakes but years ago no one made a better jelly donut, creme donut or crumb cake then them
Sorry to see you go but the real College Bakery left 25 years ago
College is no longer here but the original baker still baking,
Can you tell me the establishment that I can purchase a cake by Mr. B?
Dear Bakers Wife,
My family grew up on The College cakes, pies and buns. We always had the pies for Thanksgiving
along with the apple and whipped cream strudel. Our favorite of all was the hard chocolate layer cake. We now all live in Staten Island but if your husband is still baking I would love to surprise my family with the chocolate layer cake for Easter. Please let me know if this is possible. A family filled with loving memories of your treats. Roseanne
the best birthday cake i ever had, if the baker is still baking, how can i purchase one
My boss was just telling me about his aunt always buying him something similar to a raspberry tart from College bakery, for when he would come home from school. He doesn’t remember the name of the ‘pastry’ but said it was kind of like a tart – but the shell was kind of hard. Can you name it?
IT WAS CALLED A JELLY TART. MY FAVORITE.
I remember your jell tarts the best in Brooklyn,I started buying them over 40 years ago.Would love to know if they can be bought today. It was a sad day in brooklyn when the bakery closed,it is surly miss.

First off, I can’t believe no one has mentioned the Gingerbread Men!!! I grew up on these and was crushed when I heard College closed. Had I known they were closing, I would’ve for sure begged for the recipe. I see that two people have said the baker is still baking. If this is indeed true, please contact me.

Does anyone know where you can buy those fabulous jelly tarts?
I loved this bakery. Especially the spice cake!!! Four generations of my family loved this bakery. I went to the Middle School across the street and knew one employee from my neighborhood. I was stunned to see it go. Baker’s Wife, is there any chance that the Baker would part with (sell)the spice cake recipe??? If so please email me at gcarr@empire.state.ny.us.
Wow is right! Me and my family, have been in mourning since College Bakery closed without warning. This was the place to get the best tasting cakes ever made. Whenever we had a Birthday, Anniversary,Bridal Shower, Baby Shower, Graduation Baptizm anything you name it, even just an urge, or just being in the neihborhood because even though we moved away,we’d still come all the way back to Brooklyn to get us some College Bakery. We’d really like to know if they opened up in another location, because we’d be right there. Anyway, sorry to see them go. Betty, originally from Brooklyn, born and raised .
Dave Evans, I must agree. The gingerbread men were my favorite! They were the best gingerbread men I have EVER had.
Bakers wife, does your husband still make these? Where can I buy them? How I miss them.
Edna Seeli, who worked there was my neighbor. We were always eating cake from the bakery. My favorite was the crumb cake. Of course, whenever there was a birthday it was a College bakery cake.
Mrs. B,
Thank you so much for responding to my message. I was so glad to hear from you. I’m sorry Mr. B went through all that, I had no idea. I’m glad Mr. B is still baking. I read all the wonderful comments people left regarding his baked goods. Thanks for letting me know where he works now. My daughter’s birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. Perhaps I’ll stop by sometime soon with Vivian and order a strawberry shortcake along with some other wonderful tasty treats. I wish you and your husband all the best. Take care. :)
